Working on company culture.

How is a company culture actually created? On an individual level, we often talk about attitude – a personal outlook on the world around us. When a small group, such as a work team, shares that outlook, they form a norm together. Over time, as different teams’ norms blend and collaborate, a company culture emerges—it becomes our culture, the way things are done here.

Changing culture

Sometimes, culture needs to change. It might be due to new goals and visions, external shifts, or because the company has evolved into new business areas. Whatever the reason, culture can be shaped and changed. But any cultural transformation must always start at the top, with leadership. That’s essential, because as humans, we naturally resist changes to how we are. Just as culture takes time to form, it also takes time to shift. Small, consistent steps in the right direction will bring about the cultural change needed to move the business forward in the desired way.

To successfully shift your culture, you first need to identify both your current state and your desired future state. Without that, you won’t know where you’re starting from or where you’re heading. And cultural change isn’t a single action – it requires movement in multiple areas at the same time.
